The manufacturer
Chofu Seisakusho, since 1954
A Japanese company from Yamaguchi Prefecture that has been making heating equipment for more than seventy years. Air-to-water heat pumps are one part of what it produces, alongside boilers and solar thermal systems.
Why it matters that they are made in Japan
Most heat pumps sold in Europe are made in China, including those carrying well-known European brands. Chofu manufactures in its own factory in Japan, and the compressors are Japanese too.
You can see the difference in how they behave at low temperatures and in the failure rate. The Chofu pumps we have supplied since 2018 have needed warranty repairs in under 2% of cases.
The R290 line
Chofu was among the first manufacturers to switch to propane for residential heat pumps. R290 has a global warming potential (GWP) of 0.02, compared with 675 for R32 and 2,088 for R410A, the values given in Regulation (EU) 2024/573, and it is not covered by the EU restrictions that will gradually phase out fluorinated refrigerants.
In practice, the immediate advantage is temperature: R290 heats water to 75 °C, which makes it possible to replace a gas boiler without changing the radiators.
